Ukrainian FlagIn April 2021, the International Research Organization  World Resources Institute (WRI) added Ukraine to the list of countries engaged in the just transition. This became possible due to the creation and operation of the Platform for Sustainable Development of Coal Cities of Donetsk Region.

WRI presented the Resource Center, which brings together positive examples of 31 initiatives by individual governments, communities and companies from 23 countries on 5 continents.

Ukraine was included in this list because in May 2019, the Platform for Sustainable Development of Coal Cities of Donetsk Region was created.

What is a just transition? The global transition to a green economy could create 18 million jobs by 2030. However, these jobs may not automatically benefit workers and communities, who will lose 6 million jobs in the fossil fuel sector over the next decade. It is therefore important to ensure that settlements, which are currently dependent on fossil fuel extraction and use, receive the support, social protection and investment needed for further development. This approach is the essence of “just transition”.
